Transnistria is a de facto independent state not recognized by the UN member countries, being considered de jure part of the Republic of Moldova: it is governed by an autonomous administration based in the city of Tiraspol.

The region, formerly part of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (one of the former republics of the Soviet Union), unilaterally declared its independence as the Moldavian Republic of Pridnestrovie on September 2, 1990. From March to July 1992 the region was affected by a war which ended with a ceasefire, guaranteed by a tripartite joint commission between Russia, Moldova and Transnistria, and the creation of a demilitarized zone between Moldova and Transnistria comprising 20 locations close to the Dniester river.
