Background:
British East Africa (English: British East Africa or East Africa Protectorate) is the set of territories in East Africa that were under British control from the 19th to the 20th century. It roughly included the territories of present-day Kenya. Although it was part of the dominions of the Sultanate of Zanzibar, in the late 19th century it was controlled by Great Britain; arose out of British commercial interests in the area in the 1880s and remained a protectorate until 1920 when it became the colony of Kenya, except for an independent 16 km wide coastal strip which became the protectorate of Kenya.
