Gabriela Mistral (pseudonym of Lucila de María del Perpetuo Socorro Godoy Alcayaga; Vicuña, April 7, 1889 – New York, January 10, 1957) was a Chilean poet, educator and feminist. She was the first Latin American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1945. The central themes of her works are love, affection for her mother, her own painful memories, sadness and healing.
