The Maria Theresa thaler was a currency widely used in world trade in the past and has considerably extended the fame of the Empress Maria Theresa, who reigned in Austria, Hungary and Bohemia from 1740 to 1780. In 1753 Austria signed a treated with the Duchy of Bavaria which regulated the content of silver until the tolar. The coins produced subsequently bring an X after the date and define tolar convention (Conventionsthaler). Many other German states and even the Republic of Venice conformed to this Convention determining the international recognition and success of this coin.

From 1780 onwards, the year of death of the Empress, the currency was always issued with the same date of 1780 and was coined by the following ticks: Birmingham, Bombay, London, Paris, Rome and Utrecht, as well as by ticks of Hapsburg Brussels, Hall, Günzburg, Karlsburg, Kremnitz, Milan, Prague and Vienna.
