Species belonging to Fratercula are medium-sized marine birds, with a mainly black plumage above and below white. The wide beaks, which during the rest of the year are smaller and monochromatic, during the reproductive period show a wide variety of colors, mainly red, orange and black shades. The wings are short and adapted to swim underwater, and they fly very fast during the flight (400 times per minute).
