Nikola Tesla is known for his revolutionary work and the many contributions in the field of electromagnetism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His patents and theoretical work formed the basis of modern alternating current electric power (AC), including the polyphase power distribution and electric motors AC, with which it has contributed to the birth of the second industrial revolution.

In the United States Tesla was among the most famous scientists and inventors, even in popular culture. After his demonstration of wireless communication (radio) in 1893, and after being the winner of the "War of Currents "with George Westinghouse against Thomas Alva Edison, was recognized as one of the greatest electrical engineers in the US. Many of his early studies proved forerunners of modern electrical engineering and many of his inventions represented major technological innovations.
