Background:

Prepared in 1964 by the Piedmontese confectionery industry Ferrero of Alba (Cuneo), starting from a previous cream called Pasta Giandujot and then SuperCrema.

The name derives from the noun nut, which means «hazelnut» in English, and the Italian suffix -ella, to obtain a catchy name, and is in fact the best-selling spread in the world, with a production of 365,000 tons per year. The origin of Nutella is linked to Gianduia chocolate which contains hazelnut paste. Pietro Ferrero owned a pastry shop in Alba, in the Langhe, an area known for the production of hazelnuts. During the Second World War, due to the lack of cocoa destined mainly for war stocks, Ferrero decided to replace cocoa with hazelnuts and sugar, and so he invented the "first version" of "Gandujiot". In 1946 he sold the first batch, consisting of 300 kg of Pasta Giandujot. It was a chocolate and hazelnut paste sold in cutting blocks. Supercrema was born in 1951, a vegetable preserves sold in large jars.
